Review 2/10/2010

It is amazing to me that Meade has blanketed the media, magazines, websites, etc, with ads about their new LS 8 ACF LightSwitch Telescope and yet will not provide or even discuss estimates of shipment dates with customers, like myself, who pre-ordered the product! I pre-ordered through a dealer in early January. I have a good reason to wish to confirm with Meade the shipping date as I have already paid for the product. The Meade customer service told me they do not discuss such info with customers. What is the point of having a customer service then? This is not a way for good customer relations.
4-1-10- follow up on the product The much awaited telescope arrived and I took it out on 3-30-10. The software in the "handbox" that controls the telescope and performs an automatic alignment malfunctioned out of the box. The error message in the handbox requested to reload the firmware (LS 1.4a). Unfortunately, the firmware is not available at the Meade website. The customer service does not have the software either. The only option is to send the telescope back for a replacement and hope that the replacement works! It is ironic that this telescope comes with a slot for a SD memory card, so that you can update the firmware! What kind of business sells a product that requires periodic software updates and supposedly provides product support, but does not have a copy of the software? The Meade website still links to a the wrong manual for the product, although I personally informed the company of the error.
Update 4-7-2010 I have now talked to the customer service several times and every time I get different answers. They told the dealer from which I bought the telescope that they are sending him the firmware in a SD card. They are telling me that they do not have the software and cannot send it. Their website from which you are supposed to download the software does not work. I cannot get through to a manager. The people who answer the phone will say anything to get rid of the customers.
Update 4-27-2010 I am still waiting for a replacement telescope. The dealer sent back the defective telescope per Meade's request, after the SD card with the firmware that Meade sent to the dealer did not work.
